It was all those years ago I am almost sure on a Friday afternoon when the blizzard of '78 hit! It hit big.......I recall most how high the snow was to a just turned 7 year old. My party for that Sunday was called off due to 3 FEET of snow with 5 - 7 foot snow drifts.......do you recall the billzard of '78? Any good stories.....Was New England the only ones hit that bad or was it up and down this coast? Let me know in the comments any good stories or facts........Looking forward to reading......

Ahh the memories! My brother at age 7 would have fallen right through the packed snow drifts and been lost if possible. Families in our neighborhood gathering in groups with their kids' sleds to walk an *hour* to the Purity Supreme which was only a 10mins walk down the street on a summer day. A local mini market trading by phone gallons of milk and loaves of bread for cases of beer with another store. And in general a sense of community I have never experienced before or since. Good times!
As much as I am anti-snow, I do have fond memories of '78. Mickey and I spent an afternoon next door at "the new house," jumping off the porch railings into the huge snowdrifts in the front yard. This was the first day we were allowed to play outside after the blizzard, as we had lost power for close to 3 days and Big Norma wasn't going to let us go play in the snow and then come in to a cold house. How was it that the pipes didn't freeze? George heated up cans of soup on Sterno for us to eat. I loved it because I was in third grade...if we had a storm like that now...ugh! Normie
In Winthrop, we had 3 straight weeks of school off because of the flooding. The streets along the beach had no snow, but feet of water. Lobsters and crabs everywhere, chunks of seawall missing, and so much property damage. It took us a couple of days just to move the snow away from the front door so we could get out of the house.
I was almost 10 and too young to realize how devestating the storm was. I was just happy to have endless days of sledding down streets that normally would have been full of traffic, but there was an order for no driving.
And yes, we jumped off the second floor porch into snow drifts too.
i wasn't born till a year later!
Jess you young gal you...Stephie
I think it hit Long Island with about 10 inches of snow, then ice. The ice was the crazy part. It knocked out power, closes schools. I was 14 so you know I was psyched! The thing I remembered was that we could ice skate on TOP of the snow! Isn't that wild?
I lived in Scituate, I was 7 years old, and had no school for 3 weeks. I remember the piles of snow at Angelo's Supermarket that we used to sled down... we lived a couple blocks up from the beach and the houses were wiped out. My father took tons of pictures and the historical society actually just "borrowed" them. He had them made into a big display and the historical society had each individual picture reproduced and returned the display in perfect condition so maybe some day thye will be on display at the Town Hall or something. I will post some on my blog! I remember some of slept in the kitchen to keep warm.
I was 12 and had the time of my life. We had to walk down to the Stop and Shop in Roslindale and buy groceries. My brothers made a sled trail from our driveway, down the stairs and into the backyard. They made an igloo out of blocks and we would go in and eat candy. I remember being so worried because my father was a cop and he had to walk from Roslindale to Hyde park in the dark to get to work. God bless him.. he was in his 50s at the time. We had so much fun during the blizzard of 78.. I don't want to relive it, but it was an awesome time!
I LOVE all the stories ...Thanks so much for sharing....Stephie
